The ballistic engineers at ColdBore Labs have concluded a six-month, data-intensive study into the precision capabilities of micro-compact 9mm pistols, focusing specifically on the SIG P365X and the FN 509 Compact. The objective: to establish definitive performance benchmarks for rapid, hyper-proximal target engagement—a scenario increasingly hypothesized for future competitive long-range stages. Our findings reveal that while both platforms demonstrate admirable consistency, the FN 509 Compact, when paired with a judiciously selected 124gr hollow point, consistently delivered tighter 25-yard groups, exhibiting an average extreme spread of 1.7 inches, marginally besting the SIG’s 1.9-inch average.
The differential, though seemingly minute, stemmed primarily from the FN’s slightly more favorable trigger reset dynamics and a less pronounced muzzle flip, allowing for quicker sight picture reacquisition. Velocity node testing, conducted with a MagnetoSpeed V3 on a custom fixture, showed remarkable consistency in both platforms, with the P365X averaging an SD of 11.2 FPS and the 509 Compact an 8.9 FPS over 100-round strings—impressive for sub-4-inch barrels and critical for maintaining true ballistic integrity out to the rarely considered 50-yard engagement zone. Environmental adjustments, including density altitude calculations for a 10-yard shift, were, as anticipated, negligible, yet meticulously logged.
Competitors often overlook the critical role of equipment for engagements inside 30 yards, assuming any implement will suffice. Our data, however, suggests otherwise. For those meticulous few optimizing every possible variable, from barrel harmonics on a 3.7-inch barrel to hand-tuned 9mm brass, the FN 509 Compact offers a quantifiable, if esoteric, edge. While the practical application for these findings within the existing PRS/NRL rule set remains a topic of spirited debate, ColdBore remains committed to pushing the boundaries of precision, regardless of projectile diameter or nominal engagement distance.
