Reigning National Precision Rifle Series Champion, Rexford 'Hammer' Harrison, has initiated a radical shift in his competitive platform, announcing his transition from a .284 Shehane bolt-action system to a Ravin R500E crossbow for upcoming events. Harrison cited an exhaustive analysis of cartridge inconsistencies and barrel life limitations as key drivers for this pivot towards what he terms 'ballistic string propulsion' for optimal long-range (60-80 yard) engagements.
Harrison’s new competition rig features a heavily customized Ravin R500E, topped with a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 F1 sporting the Mil-XT reticle, chosen for its generous eye relief and precise subtensions. Ammunition development is underway, with Harrison meticulously hand-tuning Black Eagle X-Impact 20-inch bolts. Each shaft is sorted by spine consistency and weight-matched to within 0.1 grains, with FOC (Front-Of-Center) precisely balanced at 18% for enhanced flight stability. Chronograph data indicates an impressive SD of 3.2 FPS across a 10-shot string, utilizing a custom-formulated bow string wax for repeatable limb kinematics.
Truing his DOPE involves validating drop charts to 80 yards, accounting for minute variations in density altitude and localized atmospheric pressure. Wind calls are executed with a Kestrel 5700 Elite, though Harrison notes the extreme sensitivity of the large-surface-area bolts to even mild crosswinds, often requiring 0.8 MRAD of correction at 60 yards in a 5 MPH full-value wind. Positional shooting, particularly from tank traps and natural terrain, now focuses on managing limb clearance and string slap during the cold bore shot sequence.
While some competitors view this as a dramatic departure, Harrison maintains it's a logical evolution in precision marksmanship. 'The physics are immutable,' Harrison stated.
