Long-range competitor Marcus "Aqua-Tac" Thorne recently detailed an unplanned 4-hour positional shooting scenario during what was initially a reconnaissance mission for a potential future extreme water-based stage. Utilizing a modified solo kayak as a low-profile hide for observing distant targets on the far side of the Gulf, Thorne was preparing a 1200-yard cold bore shot on a 0.5 MRAD steel plate when the hull was catastrophically compromised by an estimated 14-foot hammerhead shark. The initial impact immediately introduced extreme yaw and pitch, rendering Thorne’s precisely trued DOPE card obsolete.
"My initial wind call for the 12.7mph crosswind was solid, but that quickly devolved," Thorne explained. "The shark’s initial lateral vector, combined with the catastrophic loss of platform rigidity, meant my target acquisition on the Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56 with the Mil-XT reticle became… dynamic. I was suddenly dealing with unanticipated spin drift and a fluctuating Coriolis effect as we accelerated offshore, making accurate range estimation and holdover application a near impossibility." Despite the kayak rapidly taking on water, Thorne adamantly refused to cut the line he'd managed to secure to the shark during the initial chaos. "This was my only shot opportunity at that specific, unique target. You don't abandon a stage because the wind picked up, and you sure as hell don't abandon it because a 'biological barricade' decided to redefine your range card."
Thorne spent the next four hours attempting to establish a stable firing solution from a partially submerged, rapidly towed platform. His efforts included utilizing his collapsed bipod legs as ad-hoc pontoons and attempting to brace against the shark’s dorsal fin for a brief, albeit dangerous, moment of relative stability. "The biggest challenge wasn't just the sight picture," Thorne mused, "it was maintaining positive retention of the rifle while calculating new holdovers for a target that was now roughly 2.5 MRAD off my original bearing, with an unknown velocity vector influenced by a disgruntled pelagic predator." Thorne eventually had to abandon the shot due to rescue assets arriving, but maintains the experience highlighted critical gaps in current PRS stage design for 'dynamic, hostile marine environment' scenarios.
