The Leupold BX-6 Range HD rangefinding binocular has been awarded Editor's Choice for Best Rangefinding Binocular by Outdoor Life, distinguishing itself in a competitive field of eight leading units.
Outdoor Life's editors evaluated contenders across several critical metrics: ranging performance, display and optics quality, features, and overall value. The BX-6 Range HD secured the top position based on its cumulative score, with editors specifically commending its optical performance, ranging engine, and sophisticated ballistic solvers.
The binocular's optical system was noted for a bright, crisp image that maintained clarity to the edges, exhibiting minimal color fringing. In Outdoor Life’s field evaluations, the BX-6 Range HD demonstrated substantial ranging capabilities, successfully acquiring reflective targets out to 5,120 yards. Distances to natural elements included 3,200 yards on trees and 2,311 yards on deer-sized game.
A significant factor in its recognition was the integration of advanced ballistic software. The BX-6 Range HD is the first rangefinding binocular to incorporate the Hornady 4DOF® ballistic calculator. Unlike systems that rely solely on ballistic coefficients, 4DOF® leverages Doppler-measured drag data specific to the physical bullet model, translating to more precise drop and wind drift predictions at extended ranges. For competitive archers and bowhunters, the Precision Cut Archery® (PCA) software provides shoot-to distances corrected to sight tapes, utilizing arrow weight, velocity, peep height, and current environmental conditions. Additionally, the unit offers Leupold's CDS ballistic technology with 25 selectable ballistic groups for rifle hunters. Both 4DOF® and PCA® benefit from real-time environmental data collected by the binocular’s on-board sensors.
The Leupold Control App received particular attention from the editors, who described it as a critical component for deploying the binocular's ballistic capabilities in the field. They characterized the app as fast, feature-rich, and easy to share across devices via QR code, calling it “the best of the dozen or so brand-specific ecosystems.” The app allows users to customize operating modes and settings, build and modify ballistic profiles, select reticle and display layouts, capture ranges, and drop GPS waypoints with minimal interaction. It is available for free download on both Apple App Store and Google Play.
Beyond ranging and ballistics, the BX-6 Range HD facilitates Precision GPS Pinning, which converts ranged targets into shareable map waypoints. These waypoints are compatible with various mapping platforms, including onX, HuntStand, DeerCast, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Baseline Maps, and ATAK.
Physically, the binocular features a red, dimmable AccuView Display and interchangeable form-fit eyecups for user comfort. On-unit programming is managed via five intuitive directional buttons. Each unit ships with a binocular case, lens covers, and an Arca-Swiss tripod adapter, enhancing its utility in varied shooting positions. The BX-6 Range HD is designed to be waterproof and has undergone extreme climate testing, backed by Leupold's Optical Lifetime Guarantee and a 5-Year Limited Electronics Guarantee.
Eric Overstreet, Technology Product Line Manager for Leupold & Stevens, Inc., noted that the BX-6 Range HD was designed to serve as a comprehensive tool for target identification, ranging, and providing accurate shooting solutions, expressing pride in its performance against category leaders.
