The landscape of AR-15 platforms with enhanced cycling rates has gained a significant contender with the introduction of the One Horse Express Rifle. This new offering marks the first fully assembled and tuned AR-15 to incorporate forced-reset technology directly out of the box, a collaboration with Atrius Development Group to feature their Forced-Reset Selector (FRS).

Forced-reset technology provides a distinct mechanism for achieving rapid semi-automatic fire. Unlike traditional full-automatic systems where a single trigger depression results in continuous fire, forced-reset devices require a distinct trigger pull for each round fired. The Atrius FRS, a drop-in safety selector with a third position, utilizes the cycling bolt’s momentum via a specially designed cam to force the trigger forward, effectively resetting it for the next shot. This design ensures the original trigger group functions as in semi-automatic mode, with the hammer interfacing and locking onto the disconnector, fully resetting for each cycle. This functionality is classified as “enhanced semi-automatic” fire, distinct from fully-automatic operation.

This classification is notable given prior developments concerning Forced-Reset Triggers (FRTs), which first appeared on the commercial market in late 2020. Less than a year later, the ATF began classifying FRTs as devices that converted semi-automatic rifles into machine guns. In May 2025, federal court rulings determined that FRTs did match the definition of fully-automatic or machine guns, citing the requirement of a single trigger pull for continuous fire while an FRT forces the trigger forward, thereby requiring a pull with each shot. The mechanical distinction lies in how the reset is achieved; an FRT self-contained trigger group has the hammer itself press the trigger forward as the bolt cycles, without a disconnector, using a separate lockout mechanism.

Prior to the One Horse Express Rifle, integrating forced-reset technology often necessitated acquiring separate components, ensuring compatibility, and potentially upgrading to an M16 profile bolt-carrier group (BCG). Further tuning, such as swapping buffer systems or adjusting gas blocks, was frequently required to achieve reliable operation. The One Horse Express Rifle, conversely, promises immediate functionality upon unboxing.

Indeed, observations indicate the rifle lives up to its claim, performing as a reliable workhorse. Reports detail taking the rifle directly to the range, without any prior cleaning, and topping it with a Crimson Trace HRO. The rifle reportedly fed and ejected various ammunition types, including Winchester 62gr M855s, PMC 55gr X-TAC FMJ-BTs, and Federal 55gr 5.56 FMJs. Across approximately 500 rounds, no malfunctions were experienced.

The enhanced semi-automatic functionality of the Atrius FRS is evident. When the selector is in the third position and the trigger is pulled, the cycling bolt’s action is observed pushing the trigger forward to reset. This can even be manually confirmed in an unloaded state by pulling the charging handle with the trigger depressed. During live fire, it is reportedly possible for a shooter to consciously maintain pressure on the trigger, allowing the rifle to continue firing until the magazine is empty.

Performance metrics indicate consistent split times. During two reported testing sessions, splits were recorded as low as .07-second (approximately 850 RPMs) to as high as .09-.10-second (approximately 650 RPMs). Ammunition and magazine choice were significant factors; spicier M855 rounds achieved faster rates with either the included THRiL magazine or a Magpul Gen 3. Federal and PMC 55gr loads delivered splits between .07 and .08 seconds (occasionally .09 seconds), translating to 750-800 RPMs in these magazines. Using cheaper, potentially dirtier metal magazines reportedly resulted in slower bolt cycling and reduced RPMs.

Regarding accessory compatibility, the rifle was tested with a SilencerCo muzzle brake ASR and then with a SilencerCo Velos LBP 5.56 suppressor. The Low-Back-Pressure (LBP) design of the Velos was noted as not significantly increasing pressure, though it is suspected that other suppressors with lower internal volume (i.e., not flow-through designs) could over-gas the rifle and induce malfunctions.

The rifle ships with an H2 buffer system. While the potential exists to reach higher rates, possibly 900 RPMs, by switching to a lighter H1 buffer, this change would likely increase wear on internal components and amplify felt recoil, making follow-up shots in the third position more challenging. Shooters considering such a modification would need to weigh these performance gains against the trade-offs.

The SOCOM profile barrel, even when hot after multiple nearly consecutive magazine dumps, reportedly maintained point of impact stability and accuracy without degradation or visible heat vapors. The rifle also exhibits a balanced feel, despite being described as lighter than some AR-15 setups. Recoil in the third position is manageable with a proper, aggressive stance; however, a lapse in stance control mid-magazine may necessitate adjusting position to regain control. Overall, the gassing appears well-suited for a variety of ammunition options, making the One Horse Express Rifle a compelling factory-tuned option for shooters prioritizing high rates of semi-automatic fire.
