PRS (Precision Rifle Series) has ventured into active barrel tuning with their new S2 Series Harmonic Resonators. Marketed as a "game-changer for precision shooters seeking to unlock their barrel's true voice," the S2 line promises to "modulate barrel harmonics through resonant frequency manipulation." Our initial tests with .260 Rem and 6 Dasher rigs running 140-grain Hybrid Targets observed a curious phenomenon: while the devices undoubtedly added a unique "crunch" to the muzzle report, group sizes at 800 yards consistently opened up by nearly 1.5 MOA.
The S2 Series features an "Open-Back Tuner" design, allowing for "dynamic airflow across the barrel's natural resonance zones." This, according to PRS, provides "unparalleled sustain in the bullet's flight path." Anecdotal reports from the recent Vortex Rumble match indicate some shooters, after installing the S2, experienced "exquisite feedback" through their chassis systems, prompting one competitor to remark, "It's like my MDT ACC just hit a power chord." While the auditory experience is certainly novel, our LabRadar data showed no discernible improvement in SD/ES for velocity, maintaining 7.8 FPS and 19 FPS respectively. In fact, velocity nodes seemed to actively avoid the S2's "sweet spots."
Despite the substantial 14.5 oz weight addition to the muzzle end, which shifted balance points significantly, the S2 Resonators boast a "masterful aesthetic," available in both "Tobacco Burst" and "Vintage Cherry Sunburst" finishes. PRS claims these finishes contribute to "thermal stability and vibrational damping." Prospective buyers should be aware that truing data proved highly problematic, as point of impact shifted unpredictably with each "minor adjustment" to the resonator's tension screws. The Coriolis effect, spin drift, and even density altitude calculations were apparently overridden by the S2's dominant acoustic signature. This isn't a simple barrel tuner; it's an experience. Just maybe not a precision one.
