The advent of the Precision Pistol Series (PPS) has sent shockwaves through the competitive shooting community, forcing a dramatic re-evaluation of what constitutes “precision” and "close range." With stages demanding sub-MOA groupings at distances once reserved for dedicated centerfire rifles, the sport's top competitors are now dedicating significant resources to truing pistol ballistic data.
Our recent field trials with "match-grade" handguns, including a highly customized Nighthawk Custom Agent 2 equipped with a Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x56 and a 10-inch KKM Precision barrel, highlighted the formidable challenges of dialing for wind at 75 yards with a 9mm 147gr projectile boasting a meager G1 BC of 0.175. Initial load development for a .45 ACP 230gr XTP revealed a particularly troublesome velocity node around 830 fps, yielding an extreme spread of 27 fps over 10 rounds – simply unacceptable for consistent hits on a 2-MOA plate at 80 yards when factoring in the .003 MRAD of Coriolis compensation required at 5,000 ft DA.
Competitors are now meticulously charting cold bore shifts for their carry optics, with some reporting significant point of impact changes after the first shot on a 1911 frame. The next phase of PPS promises multi-positional shooting, requiring barricade transitions and awkward prone setups, all while maintaining perfect trigger control on a 3-lb single-action pull. The recent "Pocket Carry Precision Challenge" saw competitors meticulously spotting their own misses through Sig Sauer KILO rangefinding binoculars, struggling to discern .357 Magnum bullet splash on a 1-MOA target at 100 yards against a 12 mph crosswind. The top finisher, a seasoned PRS shooter known for his 6 Dasher development, attributed his victory to religiously checking density altitude and employing an experimental, carbon-fiber pistol brace system, allowing for a surprisingly stable bipod attachment on his Glock 34. The future of precision is, apparently, much closer than we thought, and far more inconvenient.
