The M24 Sniper Weapon System has served military forces since 1988, demonstrating its enduring utility. While the M24 design itself is well-vetted, previous US Army modernization efforts often centered on cartridge upgrades or, in one instance, a chassis system. In 2019, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) pursued a different path, collaborating with MDT to develop a modernized M24 SWS solution focused on a chassis upgrade, a new optic and mount, and a muzzle brake. This report focuses specifically on the implications of the new MDT chassis.

The IDF's initiative addressed the M24's limitations in dynamic operational environments. While the original fiberglass stock performs capably in static range conditions, modern combat scenarios frequently demand night operations and stability from improvised field positions. The new MDT chassis offers significant improvements here, enabling full integration of night vision optics, lasers, and illuminators. It also incorporates a detachable AICS-style magazine, a heavy-duty folding stock, and comprehensive adjustability for shooters of various sizes.

Upon inspection, the MDT chassis presents a robust construction, designed for demanding applications. It features a night vision rail that attaches with four substantial screws and includes MLOK slots for accessories. The fore-end is reinforced with alignment pins for the night vision rail. Ergonomic enhancements are evident in the removable ambidextrous thumb shelf and a wide trigger guard, allowing gloved operation while providing drainage. The stock's hinged folding mechanism is designed to collapse against the bolt handle side, preventing excessive width when stowed.

The stock’s adjustability is a key feature, offering precise control over length-of-pull, cheekpiece height, and butt plate position. The cheekpiece can also slide side-to-side, crucial for maintaining a consistent stock weld with various optics. Swapping from the M24's original stock to the MDT chassis is described as a straightforward process, taking minutes as the action bolts directly into the chassis and rails screw into place.

In terms of performance, the chassis’s design facilitates easier feeding from AICS-style box magazines compared to the M24’s internal box. Users have also reported notable accuracy with the modernized system. One observer noted a five-round group fired at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal Ammunition measuring .497 inches, equating to .475 MOA. Further load development with 175-grain SMKs produced a best group of .209 inches at 100 yards, or .200 MOA. These results suggest the modernization effort successfully enhances both the M24's adaptability and its inherent precision. The IDF's approach demonstrates a viable method for bringing legacy systems into the modern era without requiring a complete platform replacement.
