West Virginia University opened its competitive rifle season with a commanding 4737-4587 victory over Mount Aloysius at the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown, West Virginia, propelled by sophomore Océanne Muller's perfect 600 in air rifle. Muller’s exceptional performance was critical, particularly as she finished in a three-way tie at 1186 alongside senior Griffin Lake and junior Jennifer Kocher in the aggregate standings. The tie was ultimately decided by centers, with Muller's 94 centers edging out Lake's 93 and Kocher's 89.
Muller’s air rifle card was a pristine display, featuring six consecutive 10-shot strings of 100, culminating in a 600-57X. This achievement marks her as the 12th Mountaineer to post a perfect 600 in the discipline; Lake also reached this milestone last season. In smallbore, Muller contributed a 586-37X. Griffin Lake led the smallbore field with a 590-43X, highlighted by three consecutive 100s across his second kneeling string and both prone strings.
Jennifer Kocher also delivered a strong showing, nearly mirroring Muller's air rifle score with a 598-50X, including four straight 100s. She added a 588-39X in smallbore. The consistent performance from Muller, Lake, and Kocher underscores the team's top-tier talent, reminiscent of their collective 599 air rifle scores that secured WVU its 21st NCAA championship six months prior.
The Mountaineers' overall team aggregates reflected their dominance, posting a 2351-149X in smallbore and a 2386-204X in air rifle for the 4737-353X total. Coach Jon Hammond's five-person scoring team, which included Lake, Muller, Kocher, sophomore Jack Ogoreuc, and junior Jacob Wisman, saw top performances across the board. Ogoreuc placed fourth with an 1179-77X aggregate (587-30X smallbore, 592-47X air rifle), while Wisman finished just one point behind at 1178-71X.
The depth of the West Virginia roster was evident, with several non-scoring athletes posting scores that would be competitive on most teams. Senior Lauri Syrja's 588-35X in smallbore matched Kocher for the second-best individual score in the discipline, and junior Ashlyn Blake's 595-46X was the fourth-best air rifle score of the day, neither of which counted towards the team aggregate. West Virginia secured nine of the top 10 aggregates in the match.
Freshman Karlie Lynn made a significant collegiate debut, placing seventh overall with an 1177-74X aggregate, comprising a 584-29X in smallbore and a 593-45X in air rifle. Lynn represented the United States at the ISSF Junior World Championships this past summer. Sophomore Hana Strakusek, who competed for Slovenia at the same championships, finished 10th at 1165-59X.
Mount Aloysius, a Division III school, showed notable improvement, achieving a 4587 aggregate that was 51 points better than their previous best against WVU. Kayla Trinkle, the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference Athlete of the Year, was the only non-Mountaineer to break into the top 10, placing ninth at 1168-65X with a 583-26X smallbore card that included 100s in both kneeling and prone. Molly Miller matched Trinkle's 585 in air rifle.
West Virginia's competitive schedule continues with Great America Rifle Conference play on October 3 at Army’s Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, New York, followed by matches against Norwich and John Jay on October 4. The team's first encounter with a 2026 NCAA Championship contender will be on October 17-18 at Georgia Southern, where the 2027 NCAA Championship is also slated to conclude the season.
