In a fiercely contested collegiate rifle match, the No. 15 Akron Zips faced off against the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats, ultimately falling short with a 4718-4693 defeat. Despite the outcome, Akron achieved its highest team score of the season, a critical detail for NCAA Championship selection where every point contributes to a team's three highest scores fired at different locations.

The Zips started strong in smallbore, delivering precise shots to keep the margin tight. By the end of the smallbore phase, Akron trailed Kentucky by a mere 10 points. This razor-thin gap underscored Akron's competitive resolve, as a single perfectly centered shot can be worth 10 points. The smallbore competition saw four shooters tie for top individual honors with impressive scores of 586. After tie-breaking procedures, Kentucky claimed the top three positions, with Akron senior Logan McClimans securing fourth place with his 586. Talented sophomore Kathleen Moran followed closely with a 585. Rounding out Akron's top smallbore performances were senior Diane Heschel with a 582 and sophomore Matthew Kimball with an 581. This collective showing suggests Akron's dedicated training on the smallbore range is yielding significant results.

Moving into air rifle, Kentucky managed to widen their lead by an additional 15 points. The Wildcats secured the top two individual air rifle scores with a pair of 597s. However, Akron's lineup also demonstrated notable strength. Freshman Maddie Allen delivered a remarkable 594 out of a possible 600, signaling a promising future for the Zips. Sophomore Kathleen Moran continued her strong day, adding an impressive 592 to her aggregate. Akron’s air rifle squad finished the discipline with a team score of 2362 out of a possible 2400, marking another season high.

In the individual aggregate standings, Kentucky’s junior Sam Adkins posted the top score with an 1183-87X, followed by senior teammate Braden Peiser with an 1183-85X. Akron’s Kathleen Moran led her team, finishing third overall with a strong 1177-79X aggregate.

Akron's schedule offers no respite, as the team prepares for its next challenge north at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks on November 7-8. This upcoming competition, which will be livestreamed, presents another opportunity for the Zips to continue building on their season-best performances as they pursue qualification for the NCAA Championship.
