In a development that has sent seismic waves through the competitive precision rifle community, an heavily customized Ruger Mini-14 unexpectedly secured a third-place podium finish at the recent ‘Desert Rattler Challenge’ regional PRS match in Barstow, CA. The outcome has ignited fervent debate over platform optimization and the very definition of "competitive viability," with many questioning the very foundations of accepted rifle builds.
The Mini-14, campaigned by relative newcomer Chet "Barrel Hack" Henderson, began as a standard 580-series Ranch Rifle. Henderson replaced the factory stock with a bespoke aluminum chassis system, reportedly costing more than the base rifle itself, specifically designed to mitigate the inherent flex and improve interface with modern shooting bags and barricades. A 20-inch, .223 Wylde chambered, heavy-profile Shilen barrel, cryo-treated for enhanced thermal stability and with a 1:7 twist, was painstakingly fitted, reportedly after Henderson performed extensive lathe work to adapt it to the Mini-14's proprietary gas block system. This setup allowed for stable flight of 80gr Hornady ELD Match projectiles, handloaded to a meticulous 2780 FPS, exhibiting single-digit SDs.
