Wyoming's pioneering foray into interscholastic precision rifle competition has officially kicked off, with the Wyoming High School Athletics Association (WHSAA) unveiling stringent eligibility requirements that immediately sent shockwaves through the junior long-range community. For the inaugural varsity season, student-athletes seeking a spot on their school’s precision rifle team must now demonstrate a velocity standard deviation (SD) of 9 FPS or less over a 10-shot string, using their declared match ammunition, during tryouts. Furthermore, each competitor is mandated to submit a fully trued DOPE card for distances out to 1200 yards, derived from live-fire data, before even stepping onto the range for positional assessment.
The mandate, effective for the 2025 season, places significant pressure on adolescent handloaders already navigating the complexities of academic schedules. "We're seeing an unprecedented demand for early access to chrono bays," noted Coach Brenda Fensworth of Powell High, whose program anticipates fielding a full squad of fifteen. "Our top junior, Caleb 'The Dasher' Stone, is currently battling a perplexing 11 FPS SD on his 6GT loads, despite meticulously annealing his Alpha brass after every third firing. He's considering switching to a Berger 109 Hybrid, but that means re-developing his velocity node completely." Sources indicate several high schools are already investing in advanced LabRadar units and dedicated load development coaches.
Beyond velocity consistency, the WHSAA also requires cold bore shot consistency within 0.3 MRAD at 100 yards, followed by a mandatory, un-sightered 600-yard stage from a PRS-style barricade. This push for early-career mastery aims to cultivate a generation of shooters prepared for top-tier collegiate programs and ultimately, the professional PRS circuit. With college scholarships for precision rifle athletes now a burgeoning reality, the stakes for these young competitors are higher than ever, demanding not just marksmanship, but a comprehensive understanding of ballistics, wind calls, and extreme data management, all before their driver's license exam.
