A seasoned shooting editor recently undertook the development of two new 6.5mm wildcat cartridges, a project born from the necessity of mitigating recoil during high-level competition. After experiencing a debilitating recoil flinch while competing with a .308 Winchester rifle at the National High Power Rifle Championships at Camp Perry and the National Silhouette Rifle Championships, the editor sought a caliber that could match the .308’s accuracy and performance without its significant recoil impulse.
This search led to the venerable 6.5mm (.26-caliber) bullet, a design with a storied history dating back 101 years to Paul Mauser's 6.5x57. The 6.5mm proved globally sensational, widely adopted across Europe for its unique characteristics: relatively small, mild-kicking, and loaded to moderate velocities with bullets possessing high weight-to-diameter ratios. These slender, stable projectiles, often driven at higher than normal rotational speeds, offer superior resistance to wind deflection, deep penetration, and effectiveness without high velocity. Such attributes made 6.5mm cartridges the caliber of choice for hunting in regions like Sweden and for target athletes competing in demanding 300-meter international rifle events, prized for their accuracy, wind resistance, and mild recoil.
Despite its international success, the 6.5mm caliber saw remarkably little traction in the American market, with past offerings like Charles Newton's .256, Winchester's .264 Magnum "Westerner," and Remington’s .264 Remington Magnum largely missing the core appeal of the successful European designs. Recognizing the competitive edge and physical relief an American-developed 6.5mm could offer, the editor decided to adapt readily available American cartridge cases. While the .308 Winchester, a proven parent case for successful wildcats like the .243 Winchester, 7mm-08, and .358 Winchester, was initially considered for its availability and short-action compatibility, it was ultimately deemed to have "more powder capacity than necessary." The ideal candidate emerged in the form of the .250 Savage case, also known as the .250-3000, which the editor hailed as "perfect" for its efficiency and compact nature, drawing a parallel to the classic 6.5x54 Mannlicher.
Before the development evening concluded, specifications for two distinct 6.5mm cartridges were sketched: one based on the efficient .250 Savage case, and another utilizing the .308 Winchester case. Performance projections highlight significant competitive advantages. A 120-grain bullet loaded to a modest 2,400 fps would yield recoil comparable to a .243 Winchester, facilitating faster shot recovery during rapid-fire stages and positional shooting, thus allowing more time for precise aiming. For longer ranges, a slick 140-grain bullet driven to 2,650 fps promises enhanced wind resistance and energy, sufficient for engaging large silhouette targets up to 500 meters. This load is projected to offer virtually identical wind drift to .308 match loads with 168-grain bullets at 600 yards, but with a substantial 40 percent reduction in recoil, providing a clear advantage for precision rifle competitors. The editor also notes a 140-grain hunting bullet at 2,800 fps would rival the performance of a 130-grain .270 Winchester factory load, emphasizing the versatility for both target and field applications.
