Federal’s Ballistic AE app for iOS received an update, announced October 15, which significantly refines its interface for precision rifle shooters. The key improvement is the merger of its heads-up display and DOPE chart into a unified interactive workspace, directly addressing the need for faster, more intuitive access to critical ballistic data.

This redesigned screen places real-time trajectory data alongside adjustment figures, allowing competitors to make rapid calculations without navigating away from the primary display. Users can manually adjust variables such as wind direction, wind speed, and range directly on this single screen. Furthermore, elevation, environmental updates, and wind corrections are all integrated, a design choice aimed at reducing the toggling between screens that can consume valuable time during a match or hunting scenario.

Beyond the central display, Federal has also refined the app's overall layout. Organization of rifles, profiles, and loads is improved, and favorites-based menus ensure that frequently used setups are quickly accessible. For enhanced field utility, the updated app includes Bluetooth connectivity, enabling pairing with external wind meters and other supporting devices. Live weather integration and GPS-aware tools further round out its capabilities. Crucially, the app retains its offline functionality, an essential feature for hunters and shooters operating beyond cellular service.

The underlying ballistic engine remains consistent with previous versions. Ballistic AE continues to calculate trajectory, windage, and velocity, supporting projectiles from Federal, Remington, Fiocchi, and Speer. Its G1 and G7 ballistic coefficient calculator incorporates advanced factors such as aerodynamic jump and spin drift, providing a comprehensive solution for complex ballistics. Results derived from these calculations can be easily printed as DOPE cards or exported as detailed charts.

User convenience is further supported by a robust rifle profile management system. Shooters can store specific optics configurations, along with critical rifle data like twist rate, barrel length, sight height, and zero distance for each firearm. The app offers an extensive database of factory ammunition and a library of proprietary bullets for those who develop custom handloads. Both classic and modern cartridges are well represented, with built-in ballistic data for Federal’s Peak Alloy cartridges, including 7 mm Backcountry and 6.5 mm Creedmoor +Peak.

Jason Nash, Federal’s vice president of marketing, stated that the mobile app “will improve the accuracy of their system.” The updated Ballistic AE app is now available for download from the Apple App Store and federalpremium.com, offering an enhanced toolset for long-range precision.
