For competitive long-range precision rifle shooters, time spent confirming impacts downrange is time not spent refining technique or preparing for the next shot. The utility of target camera systems, which deliver real-time visual feedback to the firing line, quickly became evident in this pursuit.
Texas-based Longshot Cameras has released version 5.3.5 of its Longshot App, building on a significant overhaul of the application earlier this year. This latest update focuses primarily on improving speed and enhancing the tools available for marking and analyzing shots on paper.
According to Company President Clay Rhoden, the development work centered on creating a more responsive application and providing superior tools for shooters once their projectiles impact the target.
Efficiency gains begin with speed. Longshot has upgraded its video streaming system to operate with greater efficiency and reduced latency. This translates to a live view that more closely mirrors real-time events downrange, providing immediate feedback critical for diagnosing shot timing and consistency.
Adding another dimension to target feedback, shooters utilizing an Install or Competition Kit equipped with a microphone can now stream audio from the target end directly to the app. This feature, exclusive to these two systems when a microphone is present, offers auditory confirmation of impacts, which can be invaluable for identifying subtle bullet strikes or confirming hits in challenging lighting conditions.
Shot marking capabilities have also seen several refinements. A new option to retain session markers allows shooters to maintain marked impacts across an entire session, eliminating the need to restart the marking process. Furthermore, a continuous marker count feature now provides a running tally as markers are placed, which aids in organizing and tracking extended shot strings common in load development or extended practice sessions.
Improvements extend to the app’s Blinker Shot Locator. A new Capture on Mark function automatically records a fresh Blinker image each time a shooter places a shot marker. This automates the creation of an impact record, allowing for uninterrupted focus on the firing line while still capturing crucial data for later study or analysis.
Rounding out the new features is Analyze Media, a dedicated section within the app for working with recorded video and images from a range session. This provides a centralized space for post-session data review, allowing shooters to delve into their performance without leaving the application.
These additions complement an existing suite of features that already includes live target video, manual shot marking, group measurement, zero adjustment, session recording, and comprehensive media management. Version 5.3.5 is now available for download on both iOS and Android platforms, compatible with current Longshot systems.
