The appeal of short, utilitarian rifles is well-understood among competitors and enthusiasts, driving specific gunsmithing projects to achieve more compact platforms. A detailed account recently emerged concerning the modification of a Winchester Model 94 30-30, transforming it into a shorter configuration with a barrel length of just over 18 inches, positioned strategically forward of the magazine tube.
The project necessitated the replacement of the rifle's factory front sight ramp, which was originally soldered in place. Rather than desoldering and re-attaching, a screw-on Truglo one-piece ramp and front sight was chosen, simplifying the attachment process by eliminating the need for heat-intensive soldering that would necessitate a complete rifle refinish. This new sight system required the precise drilling and tapping of a blind 6-48 hole into the barrel.
Critically, the gunsmith elected to perform the drilling and tapping of the blind hole before the barrel was cut to its final length. This approach allowed the use of the barrel's 'waste part' to securely clamp the assembly in a milling machine vise, utilizing bronze jaws to prevent damage. A machinist level was employed across the receiver's x and y axes to ensure the front sight would be mounted perpendicular to the receiver, addressing the common manufacturing inconsistency of canted sights often found on lever action rifles.
Drilling the blind hole involved a multi-stage process: a spotting drill initiated the hole to prevent bit deflection on the curved barrel surface, followed by a tap drill. Precision was paramount, with a milling machine's digital readout (DRO) used to control the depth to approximately .125 inches, preventing penetration through the barrel wall. Tapping the blind hole, recognized as a highly sensitive operation due to the risk of tap breakage, was executed with meticulous care. This involved using a new tap, packing the hole with tapping compound to clear chips, and turning the tap by hand with fingertips to maximize feel and prevent over-torque.
Once the sight mounting point was prepared, the barrel was cut to its desired length using a hacksaw. The final and crucial step involved crowning the muzzle to ensure consistent bullet exit. A Manson Muzzle Crown Resurfacing Kit was utilized, employing bore-expanding arbors to guide carbide cutters driven by a hand tool, effectively removing saw marks and establishing a clean, precise crown. The new front sight was then secured with Loctite, completing the modification.
It is imperative to underscore that such intricate firearm modifications, including drilling, tapping, and barrel work, demand specialized tools and expertise. All firearm alterations carry inherent risks and should only be undertaken by competent, licensed gunsmiths to ensure both safety and correct function, as improper modifications can lead to personal injury or equipment failure.
