The appeal of a compact rifle for competitive scenarios or field utility often leads enthusiasts to consider barrel modifications. One such project, focusing on a Winchester Model 94 in .30-30, outlines the steps involved in shortening the barrel to approximately 18 inches. This process goes beyond a simple cut, requiring careful consideration for sight integration and muzzle integrity.
A critical aspect of reducing barrel length is the relocation or replacement of the front sight. For this Winchester 94, the factory front sight ramp was soldered in place. Rather than heating and re-soldering, which could necessitate refinishing the rifle, a decision was made to install a screw-on one-piece ramp and front sight from Truglo. This option, while avoiding extensive heat application, required drilling and tapping a blind 6-48 hole into the barrel, a task demanding precision.
To ensure optimal alignment, the blind hole for the new front sight was drilled and tapped *before* the barrel was cut. This strategy allowed the use of the excess barrel material for secure clamping in a milling machine vise, utilizing bronze jaws to protect the finish. A machinist level was employed across the receiver's x and y axes, a crucial step given the observed tendency for factory lever-action sights to exhibit cant. The aim was to install the new sight perpendicular to the receiver, establishing a true sight plane.
The drilling process commenced with a spotting drill to establish an accurate pilot hole on the barrel's curved surface, preventing drill bit deflection. A subsequent tap drill created the blind hole, precisely controlled to a depth of 0.125 inches using a milling machine's digital read-out to avoid penetrating the barrel wall. Tapping the blind hole, identified as the most delicate phase, was executed with a new tap, tapping compound to clear chips, and a finger-tip grip on the tap holder to mitigate the risk of tap breakage, a common challenge in shallow, small-diameter holes.
With the precise hole successfully tapped, the barrel was then shortened, initially cut with a hacksaw. The final step in barrel preparation involved crowning the muzzle. A Manson Muzzle Crown Resurfacing Kit was utilized for this purpose, employing expanding arbors to guide carbide cutters, ensuring a clean and true crown. The project concluded with the application of thread locker to secure the Truglo front sight.
