These components, often made of plastic on vintage models, can become broken, cracked, or hardened, significantly detracting from the shooting experience and consistency.
Addressing this common issue involves replacing the worn component with a modern rubber recoil pad, a task that, while fundamentally straightforward, requires precision gunsmithing techniques for an optimal, integrated fit. The process typically begins with sourcing replacement components, such as a Pachmayr rubber recoil pad, often obtained from suppliers like Brownells. Once the new pad is acquired, it is attached to the stock using the provided screws; ideally, the mounting holes align with the original pad's positions.
With the new pad securely attached, the stock and pad assembly are then stabilized, commonly in a rubber-jawed vise to prevent marring. A critical step involves using a marking knife to trace the precise outline of the stock onto the newly installed recoil pad. To make this line highly visible during the shaping process, chalk is filed over the pad and rubbed in, causing the dust to settle into the traced groove.
The shaping of the pad is performed using a grinding fixture mounted to a belt grinder. This specialized fixture allows for careful adjustment, aligning the butt plate angle to perfectly match the stock's profile. During grinding, the goal is to precisely follow the chalk line, often described as 'splitting the line in two' for the most accurate fit. Experience indicates that using more coarse grit belts on the grinder cuts the rubber cleaner and faster, whereas finer belts tend to generate heat and melt the pad, hindering a precise finish.
Achieving a seamlessly integrated fit between the stock and the new recoil pad is a skill that develops with practice and attention to detail. This refinement significantly enhances the firearm's ergonomics, contributing to better recoil absorption, improved shooter comfort, and ultimately, more consistent shot placement.
