The US Army M24 Sniper Weapon System has served since 1988, seeing extensive use across global militaries. While thoroughly vetted, its design has grown dated. Past US Army modernization attempts, such as the XM24A1, M24A2, M24A3, and the 2010 M24E1, primarily focused on cartridge upgrades, with only the M24E1 integrating a chassis system. Recognizing the potential for an alternative approach, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) partnered with MDT in 2019 to develop an upgraded chassis for what became known as the IDF Modernized M24 SWS.

The IDF’s strategy was direct: replacing the original fiberglass stock with an MDT chassis, upgrading the optic and its mount, and adding a muzzle brake. While specific details on the muzzle brake and Leupold scope utilized were not readily available, observations suggest that gunsmiths or armorers reset and re-chambered the barrels, evidenced by inverted caliber markings. This comprehensive upgrade aimed to address limitations of the M24’s dated fiberglass stock, particularly in dynamic scenarios like night operations and improvised field positions, where the original system struggled to fully integrate modern accessories and ergonomics.

The MDT chassis developed for the IDF significantly enhances the M24 platform. This robust system allows for full integration of night vision optics, lasers, and illuminators, supported by a heavy-duty night vision rail that attaches securely with four large screws and features MLOK slots for additional accessories. Designed for rough duty, the chassis incorporates a hinged folding stock that collapses against the bolt handle side, preventing excessive width when stowed. Its extensive adjustability — including length-of-pull, cheekpiece (with lateral adjustment), and butt plate — ensures a proper stock weld for shooters of various sizes and with varied optic configurations.

Further ergonomic improvements include a removable ambidextrous thumb shelf, a wide trigger guard accommodating gloved hands, and a drainage slot in the trigger guard. The system also introduces compatibility with AICS-style detachable box magazines, offering a significant functional upgrade over the M24’s original internal box magazine. Reported performance data demonstrates the platform's potential, with a five-round group fired at 100 yards using Federal Gold Medal Ammunition measuring .497 inches (.475 MOA). Additionally, handload development with 175-grain SMKs has reportedly produced groups as tight as .209 inches (.200 MOA) at 100 yards, showcasing the accuracy potential unlocked by the modernized system.

The IDF Modernized M24 represents a successful effort to bring the M24 into the modern era. By retaining the core weapon system while upgrading key components, it achieves enhanced ergonomics, night vision compatibility, broad optic integration, and notable improvements in accuracy, all without necessitating a complete platform replacement. This approach provides a blueprint for breathing new life into other long-serving, proven precision rifle systems.
