Among these variables, the effect of a rifle suppressor on muzzle velocity (MV) has long been a subject of discussion, with some shooters asserting no significant change and others contending a measurable increase akin to lengthening the barrel. To contribute to this conversation, an individual engaged in extensive data gathering has shared initial findings from tests designed to compare loads both with and without suppressors, focusing on whether meaningful conclusions can be drawn for the competitive shooter.

One key dataset focused on a Ruger Precision Rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. This specific test involved five distinct 142-grain Sierra MatchKing (SMK) loads, evaluated in the same rifle, both bare-muzzled and equipped with a Q LLC suppressor. The reported outcomes revealed a nuanced picture: three of the five loads recorded a higher muzzle velocity when fired from the unsuppressed rifle. Conversely, in two of the five loads tested, the rifle fitted with the suppressor exhibited a higher muzzle velocity. This variability suggests that any blanket assumption of a consistent MV increase from suppressor use might be an oversimplification, challenging the notion of a universal 'barrel lengthening' effect across all ammunition types and rifles.

Further observations were drawn from a Lithgow rifle, also paired with a Q can. The data gathered from this setup indicated that "with some ammunition a slight advantage with the suppressor is present." While less specific than the Ruger Precision Rifle data, this finding echoes the general trend of inconsistent and minor shifts rather than a pronounced or predictable velocity gain. For PRS and NRL competitors meticulously truing their data and chasing single-digit standard deviations, such subtle and variable changes in muzzle velocity underscore the importance of individual rifle and ammunition testing.

Based on these initial observations and the ongoing data collection efforts, the overarching conclusion shared is that suppressors appear to have a "negligible effect on muzzle velocity." This assessment holds significant weight for competitors. While any MV shift, however minor, could theoretically alter long-range DOPE, the data so far suggests that such changes are not consistently positive, nor are they significant enough to be reliably exploited for ballistic advantage.
